New Fermilab Chief Financial Officer Vanessa Peoples has just completed her first week at the laboratory, but she says she already feels at home here.
“I feel like I’m supposed to be here,” she said. “Everyone has been so welcoming.”
Peoples officially joined the laboratory on Feb. 6, stepping into the world of particle physics after serving as assistant vice president for business and finance and assistant chief business officer at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has previously held financial leadership positions at the Mayo Clinic, G.D. Searle Pharmaceutical Company and University of Chicago Hospitals.
Although the research conducted at Fermilab is a little different for Peoples, her extensive experience managing federally sponsored research and involvement with finances for large organizations has her in familiar waters. Peoples will oversee the laboratory’s Finance Section.
She said she is looking forward to seeing the rest of the Fermilab campus, particularly the research areas such as the MINOS underground cavern, in the coming weeks. But one thing she has already noticed, she said, is the strong team spirit at Fermilab.
“At the end of the day, people here feel a sense of community and commitment to the lab and its mission,” she said. “The lab is truly in the hearts of the people here.”
