Obedient plant

The obedient plant, a native prairie wildflower, was recently blooming in abundance in the prairie on the north side of Pine Street. Obedient plants are so named because gently repositioned petals — for example, petals that are rotated around the stem — stay put.

So it’s not exactly gingham, but the windows of Wilson Hall in the background do look like they were cut from gingham cloth or, perhaps, were made to look like the weave of a basket.

This pink, fluffy plant is called queen-of-the-prairie, or Filipendula rubra. Native to Illinois, it is considered an endangered species in the state.
