A fire was detected last night about half a mile down the access shaft of the Soudan Underground Mine. All personnel are safe; no one was in the mine at the time the fire was detected.
The Soudan Underground Laboratory, managed by the University of Minnesota, houses two Fermilab experiments: the far detector for the MINOS neutrino experiment and the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is the operator of the mine and is coordinating emergency response. The Soudan laboratory is currently without power, as the fire system is designed to cut power in the event of a fire alarm.
More information will be posted to an update page as it becomes available.
