REAL ID Act and access to Fermilab

You may have heard in the news recently about the REAL ID Act and its potential impact on access to federal property and air travel for residents of certain states, including Illinois. Access to air travel for ID holders of REAL ID Act-non-compliant states has been extended to 2018; however, access to federal facilities has not been extended.

What does this mean for Fermilab employees?
Employee access to the lab will not change. You will still be able to enter the Fermilab site with your Fermilab- or DOE-issued badge or, if you forget your badge, with a valid photo ID, including an Illinois driver’s license. If you need a new badge, the key and ID office will be able to issue you a new badge with a valid ID, which includes a driver’s license issued by the state of Illinois.

What does this mean for contractors and visitors?
The process for badging and access for contractors and visitors is currently under review and will be posted on Fermilab at Work as soon as it is available.

What does this mean for the public?
Public access to the lab will not change, with all valid U.S. drivers’ licenses accepted at the security checkpoints.
