Starting this week, Rebecca Thompson will lead the education and public outreach office at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The office, which has primarily focused on education, is expanding its scope to assume primary responsibility for the lab’s public outreach efforts to the local communities and beyond. She comes to the lab with two decades of experience leading physics-related outreach to communities, students and teachers.
Most recently, Thompson was head of public outreach at the American Physical Society in College Park, Maryland. Her outreach efforts at APS included partnerships with NASA and LaserFest, and authoring a physics-inspired comic book series.
Prior to APS, Thompson was the outreach coordinator for the Department of Physics at the University of Texas and a consultant with the Austin Independent School District.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Bryn Mawr College and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas at Austin.
