IMAP for offsite email access-to be disabled March 24

Microsoft will deprecate the use of IMAP soon — likely, around October 2020. Because the IMAP protocol does not work with multifactor authentication (MFA), Fermilab will be disabling the use of IMAP offsite/via VPN a few months earlier, on March 24, 2020.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT TO YOU?

While onsite at Fermilab, IMAP will continue to work until approximately October 2020, when Microsoft deprecates IMAP. Note that IMAP access over VPN will also be disabled. After March 24, IMAP will only be allowed on the on-site (fgz) network.

In addition, various technical factors may force us to block even onsite access of IMAP at Fermilab earlier than October, as early as Apr. 15. If this will have a severe impact on a mission-critical function, let us know immediately by emailing mfa4e@fnal.gov so we may plan accordingly.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

If you wish to continue to access your Fermilab email while offsite after March 24, you can use the Webmail/Outlook Web Application (OWA). Otherwise, you must update your email client configuration to use the Exchange protocol. There are links to instructions for various devices in this knowledge article.
