Jeff Wittenkeller, technical specialist in the SRF Sector of the Applied Physics and Superconducting Technology Division, died on Monday, March 9.
Jeff joined Fermilab as a contractor in 1996, transforming MP-9 from a target hall into a production building for the Recycler project. Two years later, in 1998, Jeff became a full-time employee. He went on to work on the CMS project, in which he led the charge as the lead technician on the project. Starting in 2005 Jeff transitioned to superconducting RF field and became part of the Cryomodule Assembly Group while transforming MP-9 again to include a cleanroom and an assembly area. Jeff continued as a lead tech for the production of LCLS-II 1.3-GHz and 3.9-GHz cryomodules in Cryomodule Assembly Group until his passing.
Jeff was a huge asset to every project he became involved with. Jeff was open to growth through learning new things, and he didn’t mind sharing his knowledge with others. Jeff became friends with many people across the lab and he will truly be missed by all.
Anyone who is interested may offer condolences to the family, share a memory of Jeff or make a donation in his honor on his memorial page.
