Inside-out or outside-in?

In the foreground, a speckled white and dark brown or black bird of prey staring directly into the camera on a ledge. In the background, water, a woodlands, a field of grass, another woodlands and blue skies. In the distance, buildings.

In April 2021, this hawk, perched on a ledge on the 14th floor of Wilson Hall, stared at the Al Dyer, the photographer, on the other side of the window. Maybe his mask confused or intrigued the bird. In any case, the photographer walked right up to the window to capture the bird in front of a bird’s eye view of the land. Photo: Al Dyer
