WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Over the past week, a serious security vulnerability for Windows devices has been discovered. It is called PrintNightmare and it utilizes a bug in the Windows printing components to allow an attacker to gain access to the device. Fermilab has already implemented mitigations to protect Fermilab-owned equipment, but Computing is also asking users to ensure they have patched their personal Windows devices that are used to connect to the Fermilab network.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT TO YOU?
Computing asks that you ensure you have installed the latest patches that have been released to your non-Fermilab-owned Windows devices.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
Follow these steps to install Microsoft’s patch to fix the problematic bug:
- Select the Start menu (Windows icon).
- Select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Install any updates listed.
It is possible that the patch has already been installed on your system. If no updates are listed, that is likely the case.
