Automated upgrade starting Wednesday, Sept. 15: macOS Mojave (v10.14) end of life Friday, Oct. 22, 2021

Dear Mac users,

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
macOS Mojave v10.14 is approaching its end-of-life (EOL). When EOL occurs, macOS Mojave will no longer be supported by Apple and therefore will stop receiving security updates.

Starting Friday, Oct. 22, 2021, any Mac computer running macOS Mojave (v10.14) will be blocked from accessing the Fermilab network. Fermilab-owned computers, by laboratory policy, must run vendor-supported operating systems to avoid security risks.

To assist users with upgrading to a supported version, starting at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, we will initiate the automated upgrade process on those centrally managed Macs currently running Mojave. Users will be allowed to defer the upgrade until 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 at the latest.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT TO YOU?
• If your Mac is running macOS Mojave (v10.14), you must upgrade it to macOS Big Sur (v11) or Catalina (v10.15) before Friday, Oct. 22, 2021. You will see upgrade notifications on your screen starting at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15. You will be allowed to defer the upgrade until 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 at the latest.
• By default, this automated upgrade will upgrade those Macs to Big Sur, except for machines that cannot support Big Sur, in which case they will be upgraded to Catalina.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
• If your Mac is running macOS Mojave (v10.14), allow the upgrade process to proceed when you see the upgrade notification on your screen.
• If you want to upgrade to a different version or upgrade at a time that is more convenient, you may do so by opening the “Self Service” application and selecting “macOS Big Sur” or “macOS Catalina 10.15” from the upgrade section.
• If you need assistance, please submit a Service Desk ticket to request an upgrade to macOS Big Sur (v11) or Catalina (v10.15).
• If neither macOS Big Sur nor Catalina appears in the upgrade section of the “Self Service” application, that Mac may not support upgrading.
• If you have an older Mac that can’t be upgraded, please begin planning the replacement or decommissioning of the Mac. Contact the Service Desk if you need assistance.
