After 41 years at Fermilab, Steve “Cheese” Conlon will retire on Tuesday, Sept. 28. Steve has worked as a technician and computer analyst. A self-proclaimed “cable guy” – helping with connections for computers, equipment in the AD division, cable runs, copper infrastructure builds and desktop support.
When asked about his favorite memories of working at the Lab, Conlon replied, “Working with the fathers of the lab that Wilson brought in with him, and standing up at my 30th anniversary luncheon and saying, ‘Here at Fermilab we say thank God it’s Monday. We wake up on Sunday night thinking of what we want to accomplish.’ All my co-workers, including my boss, are my best friends. We go out to lunch with each other, we sit in meetings and laugh ’till we cry! It’s like the commercial that says, If you love what you do, how can you call it work?”
He told his boss he would never quit, but when his kids and grandkids moved to Texas, Conlon and his wife knew they had to move to be with them.
We will miss Steve and we wish him all the best!
