LAWISE workshop: Communicating with Courage – Thursday, Nov. 11

Back by popular demand, the Leadership Academy of Women in Science, Engineering, and Computing (LAWISE) is pleased to announce the next virtual women’s leadership workshop. The workshop will be held on Thursday, Nov. 11, from 2:00-4:30 p.m. CDT.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Marcela Carena, head of Fermilab’s Theory Division, and Professor of Physics at the University of Chicago. The workshop will focus on Communicating with Courage and is led by Janine Sergay. Situations, personalities and group dynamics play a huge role in the efficacy of our communications.  How does one influence others in this context to attain results and sustain relationships? Communicating with Courage means owning one’s competence, results and ideas. Among other things, the workshop will focus on influence through collaboration and culture, raising one’s hand without trepidation, how to go for the “big ask” and expressing concern without sounding critical.

Register for the workshop here by Wednesday, Nov. 10.

LAWISE, a task force established in 2019, explores new programs that provide training to, and increase the numbers of, women scientist, engineer, and computer professional leaders at national laboratories and the University of Chicago. The LAWISE task force is part of the Joint Task Force Initiative (JTFI), a signature University of Chicago program dedicated to helping Argonne and Fermilab achieve mission success. It has led to the creation of several joint task forces that provide critical support for national laboratories. For more information about LAWISE and its past events, please go to
