Oracle Java must be uninstalled from Fermilab-owned Macs

Dear Mac users,

This message only pertains to users who use a Fermilab-owned Mac.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

We want to inform you that all versions of Oracle Java (Java JDK or JRE) installed on Fermilab-owned Macs must be uninstalled and/or replaced with a version of OpenJDK.

Uninstallers for Oracle Java are now available in Self Service for Fermilab Macs that currently have it installed. If you need to continue to use Java after the uninstallation, you can install Amazon Coretto Java (a popular version of OpenJDK), which is now available in Self Service. Computing is making these tools available so you can uninstall Oracle Java and install Amazon Coretto Java (if needed) at a time that is convenient to you.

A future date will be set to forcefully remove Oracle Java from those Fermilab-owned Macs that still have it installed. We will send you another communication when that date is approaching.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

  • Please do not install Oracle Java on any Fermilab-owned Macs.
  • To uninstall all versions of Oracle Java (Java JDK or JRE), navigate to Self Service > Utilities and run the “Uninstall Java” policy. Please note that if you do not have Oracle Java installed, this policy will not appear in your Self Service, and you do not need to take any action.

If you still need to use Java after the uninstallation, install Amazon Coretto Java in Self Service or install another version of OpenJDK.
