Virtual workshop: People First Language in the Workplace – April 7

On behalf of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, our Inclusion Matters 2022 programming will kick off on April 7, at 9 a.m., with People First Language in the Workplace.

Katie Algrim of the Regional Office of Education of Kane County will return to Fermilab for a virtual workshop, and she will share best practices on developing a culture that emphasizes members of the community first.

“A quadriplegic” or “a person with quadriplegia.” What’s the difference? How can this improve inclusion in the workplace? As a community we must first acknowledge that people with disabilities are people first, they are not their disability. Person first language recognizes that all people have many different characteristics, skills, strengths, challenges, and interests. Having a disability does not define who a person is.
