Visitor types clarification

With updates to site access processes, it is essential to clarify the different types of visits, visitors, the appropriate ways to request access. Please read through the following carefully and reach out to access@fnal.gov for further information.

The below bullet points outline the various visitor types and the ways to request access. Further details on access and definitions of visitor types can be found can be found in the Fermilab Access Policy.

  • Affiliates:
    • Definition: Individual who accesses Fermilab’ s non-DOE-Approved User facilities (facilities other than the Fermilab Accelerator Complex) and resources for the purpose of advancing the scientific mission of the Laboratory and requires unescorted access.
    • Example: Non-Fermilab employee working and conducting research with Astrophysics.
    • Ways to request access:
  • Business Visitors:
    • Definition: Individual who has business with Fermilab that can be achieved in less than one week and is escorted when in non-public access areas.
    • Example: Attending collaboration meeting, participating in reviews, interviewees, delivery personnel, vendors, attending Fermilab/DOE sponsored events in general access areas.
    • Ways to request access: Submit a Business Visitor access request form. Refer to the Security and Site Access webpage for detailed steps.
  • One-Day Subcontractors:
    • Definition: Individual who accesses Fermilab facilities and resources. Working for one day or less via a Procurement-managed subcontract with FRA or DOE approved agreement and is escorted when in non-public areas.
    • Example: Individuals performing small electrical or plumbing repairs, computer server replacements, etc.
    • Ways to request access: A Badged Subcontractor Point of Contact or Division/Section must send an email to access@fnal.gov and follow the instructions on Security and Site Access webpage.
  • Subcontractors:
    • Definition: Individual who accesses Fermilab facilities and resources. Working more than one day via a Procurement-managed subcontract with FRA or DOE approved agreement and requires unescorted access.
    • Example: Individuals who consult on behalf of the Laboratory.
    • Ways to request access:
  • Users:
    • Definition: Individual who accesses Fermilab’ s DOE-Approved User facilities (Fermilab Accelerator Complex) and resources for the purpose of advancing the scientific mission of the Laboratory and requires unescorted access.
    • Example: Non-Fermilab employee working and conducting research on the Test Beam.
    • Ways to request access:
