Fermilab fire department to commemorate Patriot Day on Sept. 11

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks that occurred on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Every year following the tragedy, the Fermilab Fire Department has conducted an annual private ceremony on Sept. 11 at 8:59 a.m. Central time, marking the time when the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.

The members of the Fermilab Fire Department would like to invite Fermilab employees and users, whether on site or at home, to the ceremony to remember those who lost their lives as a result of the attacks that day.

In September 2014, the Fire Department requested that the small ceremony be held near Wilson Hall, in front of the United States Flag located by Swan Lake. Word spread quickly about this memorial, and attendance has grown dramatically each year. With the installation of a flag pole at the site #38 Fire Dept. in 2021, the ceremony is now held at the Fire station.

Please join us on Sunday, Sept. 11, known as Patriot Day, at 8:55 a.m. as we pay our respects and remember all those that have perished as a result of this tragic event. You may attend by meeting at the Site #38 Fire Department on the front apron or virtually through Zoom.

If you’d like to join virtually, email me at steveh@fnal.gov for Zoom information for the event.
