Reminder: Sept. 6 and 12 power outages on Batavia site

This is a reminder of upcoming power outages to facilitate laboratory maintenance on the site power distribution systems. Prior to the outages, it is recommended that you power down any equipment that may be impacted by sudden loss of power. Please do not use elevators during the power outages.

The first of two outages on Tuesday, September 6 will be from 7 to 8 a.m. CT.  This outage impacts all Fermilab locations powered by the Master Substation (MSS) on the Batavia site. The only buildings or areas NOT impacted by this outage are the service buildings in the Main Injector, SBN Near Detector, A0 Cryo, the buildings in the Village, and buildings or portions of buildings that are powered by standby generators.

The second outage on that day (Tuesday, Sept. 6) will occur from 8 to 9 a.m. CT.  This outage impacts Fermilab locations normally powered by the Kautz Road substation (KRS) on the Batavia site.  These are primarily the Main Injector Service Buildings, SBN Near Detector and A0 Cryo.

There will be another outage on Monday, September 12 from 8 to 9 a.m. CT to put the substations back into their normal configurations.  This outage, however, will only affect loads normally fed from Kautz Road Substation, namely Main Injector Service Buildings, SBN Near Detector and A0 Cryo.

When will this occur?

Sitewide power outages:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Central Time: Sitewide power outages (except for Village, Main Injector service buildings and portions of buildings powered by an emergency generator)
  • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Central Time: MI, SBN-ND and A0 Cryo power outage
  • Monday, Sept. 12, 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Central Time: MI, SBN-ND and A0 Cryo power outage

These maintenances are weather dependent. If needed, a make-up date will be scheduled.

What do you need to do?

The Feynman Computing Center (FCC) building and all Computing Sector data centers are expected to remain operational. Prior to the outages, it is recommended that you power down any equipment that may be impacted by sudden loss of power. If you work on the Batavia site and your schedule is flexible, you may want to consider arriving after 8 a.m. on the days that the outages are scheduled. Please do not use elevators during the power outages.

What is the impact to you?

During the maintenance windows stated above:

  • WH8-Fiber Central: Expected to remain operational on standby generator power
  • FCC building and second- and third-floor computer rooms: Expected to remain operational on standby generator power
  • GCC: Expected to remain operational on portable generator power
