macOS Catalina (v10.15) end-of-life Friday, Oct. 28, 2022

Dear Mac users,

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

macOS Catalina (v10.15) has reached its end-of-life with Apple. This means macOS Catalina is no longer being supported by Apple and therefore will stop receiving security updates.

Starting Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, any Mac running macOS Catalina will be blocked from accessing the Fermilab network. Fermilab-owned computers, by laboratory policy, must run vendor-supported operating systems to avoid security risks.

To assist users to upgrade to a supported macOS version, the Information Technology Division will deploy upgrade notifications to centrally managed Macs currently running macOS Catalina.

WHEN WILL THIS OCCUR?

Starting 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, upgrade notifications will be deployed to centrally managed Macs currently running macOS Catalina.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT TO YOU?

  • If your Mac is running macOS Catalina (v10.15), you will see an upgrade notification on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Deferrals will be allowed through 7 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.
  • Starting Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, any Mac running macOS Catalina will be blocked from accessing the Fermilab network.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

  • Allow the upgrade process to proceed when the notification appears.
  • If you would like to upgrade to a different version or upgrade at a time that is more convenient, you may do so by opening the “Self Service” application and selecting “macOS Monterey” or “macOS Big Sur” from the upgrade section.
  • If you need assistance, please submit a Service Desk ticket to request an upgrade to macOS Monterey (v12) or Big Sur (v11).
  • If neither macOS Monterey nor Big Sur appears in the upgrade section of the “Self Service” application, that Mac may not support upgrading.
  • If you have an older Mac that can’t be upgraded, please begin planning the replacement or decommissioning of the Mac. Contact the Service Desk if you need assistance.
