The Fermilab prairie burn season is nearly over. Here, a controlled prairie burn is conducted on a hillside. Fermilab’s trained crew always checks weather conditions and takes every precaution before conducting a burn. Prairie burns help get rid of invasive plants and are essential to restoring the natural habitat.

Fermilab visitor Matthew Tamsett, University of Sussex, found this owlet on the ground in the Fermilab Village on Saturday, April 13. Dave Shemanske of Roads and Grounds took the owlet to Willowbrook Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Glen Ellyn, Ill., to get him checked out.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, Michael Shemanske, son of Dave Shemanske (FESS), organized a cleanup of the area outside of Wilson Hall all the way to Pine Street and Kirk Road as part of a school leadership project. The volunteers, including Prarie Rangers and Cub Scout Pack 153, collected several bags of garbage.
