Neutrinos have been the darlings of poetry, the destructors of the world in science-fiction films, the names of companies, rafts and more. These ghostly particles generally come from the sun and travel through nearly everything. So, how exactly does Fermilab create and study these ghostly particles? Join Fermilab at 12:30 on Wednesday, April 6, to learn about neutrinos, including where they come from, how they fit into the field of particle physics and what neutrinos might be able to tell…

The requirement to file a tax return applies to almost everyone who spends time in the U.S. For many, this involves filing a form with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that merely reports certain types of income. If you spend a significant amount of time in the U.S. you also could need to pay U.S. taxes on worldwide income. The obligations to file or pay can arise even if you do not receive funds from the U.S., have no U.S.-employment…

Wheaton Drama to give dramatic reading of “Copenhagen” – April 8 At 8 p.m. on Friday, April 8, in One West, Wheaton Drama will perform a reading of “Copenhagen,” a play about physics and physicists, quantum mechanics and atomic weapons. The play, written by Michael Frayn, tells the story of Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg who met in 1941 when Heisenberg was in Nazi Germany and Bohr (who was Jewish) was in Nazi-occupied Denmark. Was Heisenberg trying to build an…

The lightning storms over the weekend caused a quench in the Tevatron and damage to one of the dipole magnets. Accelerator operators are currently warming up the machine in order to remove the magnet and replace it with a new one. The entire process will take about two weeks, and operators expect to be back in full operation in early April.
