Fermilab Director Lia Merminga held a special Director’s colloquium on Wednesday, where she presented the annual lab plan, including the lab’s top priorities for the coming year. Sean Carroll of Caltech will give a colloquium talk, titled “From Quantum Mechanics to Space-time,” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Summary: Nine decades in, the foundations of quantum mechanics remain mysterious. Meanwhile, modern physicists puzzle over how to reconcile quantum mechanics with gravity. Carroll suggests that these problems are related and that a promising strategy suggests itself: rather than “quantizing gravity,” we should look for gravity within quantum mechanics. Frederick Coolidge of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, will give a Zoom-only Colloquium talk titled “The Evolution of Language.” While the presence of different languages throughout the world is undeniable, the origin of language and its evolution is highly contentious. The Colloquium talk explains why Chomsky is wrong, how language did evolve, why people speak, and why the most popular topic in all the world’s cultures is gossip.
