Prairie seed harvest

The public is invited to our Volunteer Prairie Seed Harvest at Fermilab. Every seed counts! Saturday October 26, from 10 am to 2 pm. Picnic lunch provided. Drop in for the morning, afternoon, or all day. All ages and abilities are welcome to spend an autumn day in the prairie! Save the dates to volunteer for the Prairie Seed Harvests. Fermilab and the not-for-profit Fermilab Natural Areas will host their annual Fermilab Prairie Seed Harvests at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Oct. 26. All ages and abilities are welcome to spend an autumn day in the prairie!    

Come enjoy the beauty of spring wildflowers and kick off Fermilab’s Earth Week activities with a guided woodland walk in our own Big Woods! On Monday April 22, join Fermilab ecologist Wally Levernier on a stroll through the vernal woodlands just north of Wilson Hall. Bring your binoculars, and hope to see some migrating bird species. Research has shown that the presence of trees and woody vegetation in grasslands can significantly reduce the area occupied by grassland birds. To maximize usable habitat in the Eola grasslands at Fermilab, the first step is to clear the open fields of woody vegetation and trees. FNA received this grant to support the first phase of the project and hire a contractor to remove trees from this area.

Fermilab has celebrated Arbor Day since 1969. This year’s event will take place May 10 from 11 am to 1 pm. A free hotdog lunch will be provided at the Arbor Day site. The Annual Meeting of Fermilab Natural Areas will be held on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m. at the Kuhn Barn in the Fermilab Village. The keynote speaker will be Cody Considine, who will speak about “Lessons Learned from 30 Years of Restoring Tallgrass Prairie at Nachusa Grasslands.” Everybody is welcome to attend!
