Fermilab engineering physicist Aria Soha is the recipient of the 2020 Servant Leadership Award from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, known as SHPE.

The Servant Leadership Award honors a professional SHPE member who exemplifies the ideals of servant leadership both in and outside the organization.

Soha is recognized for founding the Fermilab chapter of SHPE in 2017, making Fermilab the first DOE national lab to have a SHPE professional chapter. As president of the Fermilab SHPE chapter, she also enabled Fermilab SHPE members to attend SHPE conferences and organized the society’s first Region 6 retreat, which took place at Fermilab in spring 2019. In addition, she helped Fermilab win the bid to host the SHPE Region 6 Leadership Development Conference in 2020. (The 2020 conference became a virtual town hall meeting, and Fermilab has been invited to host the spring 2021 conference in person, if circumstances allow.)

Under Soha’s leadership, the Fermilab SHPE chapter has quickly become active in student outreach. It engages regularly with SHPE university chapters and SHPE Jr. chapters (high school students). Once a year, it hosts Noche de Ciencia, an event targeting K-12 students and their parents.

Fermilab is supported by the DOE Office of Science.

Fermilab is supported by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy. The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
