Keeping liquid argon chilled underground is one of DUNEβs coolest challenges
…used as the recondensing agent. This cryogenics process flow diagram shows how argon moves through the system, starting from delivery at the surface, upper left, then once underground, how it…
Fermilab gets ready to upgrade accelerator complex for more powerful particle beams
…neutrino beams generated from particle accelerators to large, stories-high detectors. The greater the number of neutrinos sent to the detectors, the greater the chances the detectors will catch them, and…
New computing algorithms expand the boundaries of a quantum future
…a superposition of four possible states,” Shyamsundar said. The number of accessible states grows exponentially with the number of qubits used. Seems powerful, right? It’s a huge advantage when approaching…
Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility pre-excavation work is in full swing
Unlocking the mysteries of neutrinos in order to get a clearer picture of the universe and understand why we are here at all, is a monumental undertaking. However, before the…
Excavation of huge caverns for DUNE particle detector is underway
Around a mile below the surface in South Dakota, construction crews are hard at work excavating around 1,000 tons of rock per day. Their goal is to make room for…
First major superconducting component for new high-power particle accelerator arrives at Fermilab
…After the beam leaves the PIP-II linac, it will continue down any of a number of paths, charging through Fermilab’s accelerators and eventually smashing into a block of material. The…
