From Building, Design and Construction, Sept. 14, 2020: This fall, construction is scheduled to begin on the Integrated Engineering Research Center, an 85,000-square-foot infrastructure project at Fermilab. Lots of natural light and hybrid labs will distinguish the new center.

To commemorate the bicentennial of Illinois’ statehood in 2018, AIA presented the selections, which were chosen by a statewide committee of architects, local officials and other organizations in an effort to showcase the best of Illinois. Selections emphasize a collective sense of place created in cities and towns, and in structures designed by individual architects.

In the early 1970s, many of us were working lots of overtime, about 12-hour days. One day, I’d just gotten home when I got a phone call: “We need your help.”

In the 1970s, interesting shapes and striking colors were the order of the day at Fermilab. Bob Sheldon saw an opportunity when one of the outlying buildings on the site, which was to be a support facility for a large particle detector, needed a roof.
