The National Society of Black Physicists has selected Sandra Charles, Fermilab talent acquisition, diversity and inclusion manager, as an honorary member of the society. Charles’s honorary membership, conferred because of her “lifelong mentorship and sacrifices on behalf of NSBP,” brings all the rights and benefits of a full NSBP membership for the duration of her lifetime.

Charles is responsible for creating programs and strategies that cultivate diversity as a fundamental organizational value at Fermilab. Her work focuses on recruitment, education, community outreach and partnerships. She manages all graduate, undergraduate and high school programs at the laboratory, including those that support and encourage traditionally underrepresented students in their pursuit of STEM degrees and careers.

NSBP is the largest and most recognizable organization of physicists that promotes the professional excellence and success of African Americans. They value and recognize the tremendous contributions, commitment, accomplishments and sacrifices of scientists and leaders that exemplify the values of the organization.

“I’m honored to become a professional member of this esteemed organization,” Charles said. “As part of NSBP, I’ll help continue our collective effort to bring a greater appreciation of physics to the African American community, increase access to STEM employment opportunities and internships, and elevate the scientific contributions of African Americans in physics.”
