Chicago Quantum Exchange

The Chicagoland region is continuing to be recognized as a national leader in quantum technology. Recent events include the opening of the Quantum Garage at Fermilab. This designation and the collaboration among Illinois universities and national laboratories like FermiLab and Argonne will spark a new wave of research, innovation and experimentation.

The Biden-Harris administration named the Chicago region an official U.S. Regional and Innovation Technology Hub for quantum technologies yesterday. The announcement was part of the first phase of a federal initiative designed to “supercharge” innovation economies that have the potential to become global leaders in critical technology. The Technology Hubs program includes the Chicago Quantum Exchange’s Bloch Tech Hub making them eligible for funding to implement the hub’s activities.

From U Chicago News, August 8, 2023: University of Chicago has announced that the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has joined the Chicago Quantum Exchange to promote cooperation in fields such as quantum information science, climate and energy, advanced microelectronics, artificial intelligence and data science. The announcement was made at at the G20 summit in New Delhi, India and joins the CQE as one of only five international partners.

Learn why startup founders, researchers, and students are calling the Midwest region ‘the premier hub for quantum’ and how their investments are strengthening the ecosystem.

From Forbes, October 11, 2021: Fermilab is part of the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE), an intellectual hub to promote the research of quantum information technologies and the development of new commercial uses of it. While quantum computing is still in its infancy, the technology is gaining momentum around the world as governments, academic researchers, security innovators and business leaders are coalescing around the potential quantum has to fundamentally change data communication and security.

From the University of Chicago News, Sept. 2, 2021: The National Science Foundation is funding a new quantum institute at the University of Chicago that will collaborate with other Chicago-based quantum research and industry partners like Fermilab. The new institute will aim to harness the sensitivities of quantum systems and use those to advance quantum studies in biology.

From Chicago Quantum Exchange, Nov. 23, 2020: The third annual Chicago Quantum Summit brought together more than 20 speakers from across the nation and attracted more than 1,000 attendees from 42 countries. This year’s summit comes on the heels of the announcement of five new Department of Energy National Quantum Information Science Research Centers, one of which is the Fermilab-led Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center. At the summit, each center director gave an overview of their quantum center or institute goals, which included building qubit technologies, developing algorithms for quantum computation, and creating new quantum devices.
