The United Nations declared 2025 to be the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, celebrating the role of quantum theory in developing our modern technological societies. It celebrates past successes and planning for a future in which people around the world can benefit from these crucial technologies.
Engineers, physicists, computer scientists and more are needed for the second quantum revolution.
From Discover Magazine, September 15, 2021: The the Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QED-C) developed a survey in 2020 to gather information from QED-C member companies about their workforce needs. FermiLab research associate Ciaran Hughes and colleagues surveyed 57 companies involved in the incipient quantum industry to find out what kinds of skills they are looking for and those that are most in demand. This is the largest survey undertaken of the quantum industry and the results offer some surprises.
From Science Magazine, June 17, 2021: Fermilab is part of the research group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison which has found evidence that computer errors are correlated across an entire superconducting quantum computing chip — highlighting a problem that must be acknowledged and addressed in the quest for fault-tolerant quantum computers.
