In a project selected for funding by the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and partners from other national laboratories, universities and industry will apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to enable precise and adaptive resonance control in particle accelerators. Their work aims to lower operating costs by millions of dollars each year and improve accelerator performance, driving scientific discovery.

Researchers at the Illinois Accelerator Research Center at Fermilab have developed powerful, compact, and mobile electron accelerators powered by SRF technologies. A compact SRF accelerator
is a cost-effective, compact version that will enable novel applications.

The labs are developing a practical approach to reduce the size and cost of superconducting linear accelerators, which offer great potential for addressing used nuclear fuel, while also improving their reliability.
