Massive caverns for DUNE neutrino project nearly excavated

The major part of the excavation of the caverns for the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility at SURF is nearing completion. The caverns will house the very large detectors for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment in Lead, South Dakota.

Fermilab research and announcements have helped promote the mystery of muons by studying how they wobble as they move through the magnetic ring. With science announcements in 2021 and 2023, science interested readers are wanting to learn more about the heavy cousins of electrons that are constantly raining down on Earth’s surface.

Fermilab’s MINERvA experiment was chosen as one of the nine runners up as part of the Physics World 2023 Breakthrough of the Year. The MINERvA research shows how information about the internal structure of the proton can be gleaned from neutrinos scattering from a plastic target.

The recent report published by the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel highlights the important role that Sanford Underground Research Facility plays in the advancement of U.S. particles physics and its support of the DUNE project. The P5 report recommends continued support for DUNE and funding for expansion of research space at SURF that will enable the U.S. to be an international host for neutrino and dark matter experiments.

The Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel presented their report for the next decade with recommendations for the two main U.S. agencies that fund high-energy physics research. The report has five key recommendations and suggests the U.S. should explore programming to demonstrate the feasibility of two new kinds of particle accelerators.
