Fermilab and Northern Illinois University are joining forces to offer a unique Master of Science in Physics program specializing in quantum science and technology. This innovative graduate program combines the expertise of a DOE national laboratory quantum center and a prominent state university to prepare the next generation of quantum experts.

Northern Illinois University has joined the institutions advancing the frontiers of quantum information science through its new partnership in the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, led by Fermilab.

The SQMS Center enters a new era focused on scaling quantum systems from discovery to deployment — driving innovation in computation, communication and sensing.

Mackenzie Ring helps bring quantum research to life as a mechanical technician for the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center at Fermilab, assembling and maintaining the complex systems inside the SQMS dilution refrigerators. Mackenzie’s role combines hands-on work, problem-solving and collaboration to support cutting-edge experiments at the forefront of science.

Bringing expertise in materials science and engineering, Akshay Murthy is a leader at Fermilab’s Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center. Murthy’s passion at SQMS is extending the lifetimes of quantum states to realize next-generation quantum computers and sensors.

IBM plans to join Fermilab’s SQMS Center to further accelerate critical technologies and applications of superconducting quantum systems and expand quantum workforce development programs.

Congratulations to Anna Grassellino who is among the winners of the women’s Oscar, the Marisa Bellisario Award, dedicated to “Women who make the difference”. She will be awarded the international prize for her the role for leading the SQMS Center at Fermilab.

Through unique qubit fabrication techniques, scientists have demonstrated systematic improvements in the performance of superconducting devices for quantum computing, communication, and sensing.

Fermilab opened a brand-new quantum laboratory known as the “Quantum Garage” intended to use quantum computing to expand the boundaries of science and engineering and find solutions to pressing challenges including national security, medicine and clean energy. The event on Nov. 6 was attended by officials from DOE, NASA and other national labs.

Using superconducting radio frequency cavities, the project set stringent constraints on a theorized particle called the dark photon.
