A team at Fermilab have built a prototype of a superconducting cryomodule for the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) project. The cryomodules will comprise the last section of the new linear accelerator, or linac, that will drive Fermilab’s new accelerator complex.

Pantaleo Raimondi’s illustrious career brought him to some of the world’s most prestigious particle physics institutions. In January, Raimondi continued this journey as he took over the role of project director for Fermilab’s newest, more powerful particle accelerator.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council has built an ISO Class 4 cleanroom at the Fermilab to accommodate cryomodules for the PIP-II particle accelerator.

The United Kingdom will contribute superconducting cryomodules to Fermilab’s new particle accelerator. Collaborators shipped a fully equipped, 27,500-pound prototype from Fermilab to the U.K. and back to test the logistics.

A world-renowned accelerator physicist, Raimondi will lead the PIP-II project, which is building the next-generation Fermilab accelerator complex.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a $140 million in-kind contribution from the Indian Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) towards collaborative development of the Proton Improvement Plan-II Accelerator, for the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility. India will contribute to superconducting research, electromagnets, radio frequency equipment, and other technical components for PIP-II.
