Fermilab is hosting a national symposium that brings together experts from across the quantum information science community. The event comes as the United States expands its leadership in quantum technology and underscores Fermilab’s increasing emphasis on QIS research.

The SQMS Center is working on reproducible and scalable realization of highly coherent superconducting qubits to open the way to more complex and scalable quantum computing operations. These capabilities could be used in Fermilab’s core particle physics research and fundamental physics more generally over time.

The SQMS Center at Fermilab is developing state-of-the-art quantum computers and sensors for the world’s most advanced particle accelerators. Led by Ann Grassellino, the Center is made-up of 35 partner institutions exploring how novel quantum tools can advance fundamental physics.

Anna Grassellino, senior scientist at Fermilab and the director of the SQMS Center, received the Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic on Feb. 13. Knight is one of the five ranks of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the highest honor in Italy.

Anna Grassellino, a senior scientist and the director of the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center at Fermilab, was honored with the Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for her pioneering contributions to superconducting quantum technologies. Known for her groundbreaking work on superconducting radiofrequency cavities, Grassellino has helped to revolutionize and lead advancements in particle accelerators and quantum information science.

IBM plans to join Fermilab’s SQMS Center to further accelerate critical technologies and applications of superconducting quantum systems and expand quantum workforce development programs.

The Italian Marisa Bellisario Award was presented to Anna Grassellino, an Italian and American scientist with Fermilab who was recognized in the international category for her scientific work and leadership.

Zorzetti’s research aims to help preserve quantum information by focusing on improvements to the way we transport it. The award provides $2.5 million over the next five years to support her work.
